Installing a Wisy Vortex filter might seem daunting at first, but it’s a project a determined homeowner can tackle with some patience and preparation. We rate it a 6 out of 10 on the difficulty scale.
Preparing the Base
Select a suitable location for the filter. We typically lay about four inches of 304 limestone as a base — a compactable crushed limestone that provides a solid, stable foundation. (Different states may call it something different; in Ohio, we call it 304 limestone.) Tamp the base down firmly before proceeding.
Piping and Positioning
Use a four-inch SDR 35 pipe (thin-wall sewer and drain pipe) — confirm it fits into the gasket fitting of the Wisy Vortex. You’ll adapt this to your downspouts using a Schedule 40 four-inch drain line with a four-inch rubber no-hub coupling.
There’s an eight-inch drop in pipe elevation from the water entry to the clean water exit in the Wisy. Factor this into your layout and ensure the inlet slopes down toward the cistern. On the opposite side, install a trash outlet to carry debris to an overflow point — this end has a two-inch drop, so maintaining correct levels is critical for proper flow.
Ensuring Efficiency
Level installation is essential. The vortex filter works best when perfectly level, allowing water to spin around the vortex and use centrifugal force for enhanced filtration before entering the cistern.
Sealing the Joints
Seal all joints to prevent leaks. Although the top piece swivels for angle adjustments, run a bead of silicone around the seams as a best practice. Do the same for all gasketed fittings and any risers on the vortex body — add silicone, fit everything in place, and screw it down firmly.
Backfilling and Final Steps
Re-check all angles and elevations before backfilling with 304 stone. The inlet should sit higher than the cistern to accommodate any ground settling. Once everything is confirmed in place, backfill around the filter for added security.
